VDL building pilot production line for high volume production of solar cells

VDL Groep of Eindhoven has become a partner in Solliance, for the development of a pilot production line for organic photovoltaics. These OPVs are flexible solar cells made of light-sensitive plastic films. Using printing or coating techniques it is possible to produce these solar cells in a highly efficient manner in large volumes. The film containing solar cells also has unique applications, such as integration into building roofs or facades to generate energy. The trial production line is being built this year and will be installed in the new Solliance building at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven in early 2014. VDL will also begin marketing the newly developed production equipment.

Organic photovoltaics versus conventional solar panels
Both organic photovoltaics and conventional solar panels based on silicon wafers convert light into electrical current, yet organic photovoltaics offer many advantages over conventional solar panels: their low weight, the flexible form, the fact that they also work well in less favourable light conditions, and a relatively more cost-effective production process due to lower material consumption and the potential for higher production volumes. Based on these characteristics it is expected that organic photovoltaics will be deployed in a variety of applications in the future. In order to scale up industrial production of efficient and stable organic panels, new manufacturing processes and materials must be developed. That is what VDL and Solliance are going to do with this new trial production line.

Solliance
Solliance is a collaboration between R&D organizations engaged in the development of photovoltaic solar cells in the Eindhoven-Leuven-Aachen triangle. Solliance is an alliance of: ECN, imec, TNO, Holst Centre, TU/e and Forschungszentrum Jülich. Solliance aims to work with all the world's leading players in the field of thin-film solar energy on the basis of an open innovation model. The partners in the Solliance programme will collectively utilize the innovative laboratory under construction at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven.
